The man downstairs
will hear you.
You will wrap a small hand
around the twisted metal frame of the bed,
or you will grasp the corner of the
worn, wooden kitchen table
on which I have been
taking the time to tear
the meat of prawns
from their thin overcoats,
and the man downstairs will
hear you.
He will wonder whether you
are wearing the silver-bell ankle bracelet,
and if I stopped in the middle of
afternoon food, and wine, and unopened mail
to give you the slow fingers
of my right hand.
You will breathe out stifled words
in both our languages,
arch your back,
and the man downstairs
will listen.
