Trash Night, Guilford
By Dean Bartoli Smith
At night, by stars, an exchange
of gunfire up the road where
Pop-pop quaffed shots
of Cutty Sark and Schlitz,
disrupting a quiet walk to the gardens.
When my pace quickens home,
a fox darts from the bushes,
smirking as he crosses
as if he knows exactly where
the bones are buried.
The No. 11 bus to Canton
rounds the corner like Jim Parker
and gone are the days of the Fusting boys
playing tackle on an empty lot
all afternoon disguised as Unitas,
Berry, and Moore.
I think of brandishing an iron
in my hometown and linger
near the manse of Ogden Nash
now patrolled by Baskerville hounds.
The city's gone to the dogs.
Those endless spans of tulip bulbs
go a long way to assuage the fears
and warm the indigo blood
of a Codfish Cult whose time has passed.
Sleepless in a sunken park,
the barred owl hoots its warning
to my children, awake in their beds
terrified "the robbers"
will call again.
